Muhammed Nazmul Islam is a Bangladeshi-Turkish political scientist. He currently serving as the Head of Türkiye, Asia, and Indo-Pacific Studies (TAIPS) at the Institute for International Relations and Strategic Research (ULİSA) at Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University (AYBU), Türkiye. He also holds the position of Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at the university. Additionally, he serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Ankara University, Türkiye. In August 2021, he was appointed to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Turkish Parliament (TBMM) as a Special Advisor (Asia-Pacific Region) of the Foreign Relations and Protocol Department.
His work has focused on international relations and IR theories, and has made contributions to a wide range of topics in emerging and rising powers soft strategy, great power strategic competition, soft power, public diplomacy, Asian politics, media, communication and conflict resolution. Additionally, he developed the concepts of “power of bonding” and is one of the great contributors in “non-western international relations theory” and “non-western soft power strategy”. He is one of the critics of Joseph S. Nye’s theory of soft power.
Islam’s areas of specialization and teaching expertise include Research in Politics, Public Diplomacy, Soft Power, Asia and Indo-Pacific Strategy, Theories of International Relations, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Political Communication, Policy and Politics of Human-Robotics Interaction, and World Politics. His primary research interests revolve around the policies, politics, and foreign policies of middle and emerging powers in the changing international politics.
